Лейтенант, теряющий самоконтроль и убивающий собственных людей, представляет собой следующую стадию патологии солдата, выбитого из колеи войной. На самом деле для Сигела описанный случай лежит вне категорий психологии или морали. Сигел хочет показать лишь то, что блюститель порядка, постоянно общающийся с преступным миром и бандитами, оказывается словно «пропитан» ими. Человек переходит границу, оказывается на стороне виновных ― почти неосознанно, как подхватывают вирус или микроб. Для Сигела такой сбой ориентиров – всего лишь профессиональный риск, один из многих. Его точка зрения прагматична и основана на моральном релятивизме с оттенком снисхождения.
